VandCo Confetti Ombre Scrappy Gems Irish Chain quilt

Today I’m sharing a super colorful Ombre Scrappy Gems quilt! I’m trying to catch up on the blog and have almost 30 completed quilts to publish and I keep finding new ones that aren’t even on the list like this one. I can’t believe this ombre Scrappy Gems wasn’t blogged since it was made over a year ago!

Scrappy Gems is a stash friendly scrappy Irish Chain quilt pattern that came out about a year ago. It was a fun one to sew up in ombre because everything looks good in ombre.

The Scrappy Gems quilt pattern is available in the Quilty Love pattern shop.

Scrappy Gems quilt pattern

The Scrappy Gems quilt pattern is a fun take on an Irish Chain quilt. It goes together nicely with strip piecing shortcuts.

Scrappy Gems is fat quarter friendly. Because of the strip piecing shortcuts, a jelly roll or 2.5 inch strips alone don’t work. But you can use assorted 2.5 inch, 4.5 inch and 6.5 inch strips from your fabric stash for this scrappy friendly quilt.

The Scrappy Gems quilt pattern includes instructions for the following sizes:

When I designed this quilt pattern I knew I had to sew one up in Ombre. This is actually a take on Ombre Gems. This was the original design of Ombre Gems but I ended up making Ombre Gems block based for easier replication.

This version is a little more scrappy and faster and easier to piece.

Ombre fabrics are so much fun to sew with. I promise you, they look pretty magical no matter what you do with them. If I want to make a rainbow fade with ombre then I’m usually just keeping like colors together like the photo above. You really don’t need to overthink it.

This ombre fabric is Ombre Confetti by VandCo for Moda Fabrics. The confetti is probably my favorite of all of the VandCo ombre lines.

The PDF version of Scrappy Gems includes the ombre instructions for this quilt.

Machine quilting

I quilted up this Ombre Scrappy Gems myself using straight diagonal lines. The lines are grouped in sets of three with the spacing between lines 1/2 inch and 1 inch. I think I first quilted 2 inch spaced lines throughout and then added 1/2 inch lines on either side of that original line.

Hand stitched chunky binding

This is the first time I’ve done a chunky hand stitched binding! I thought it would be a fun touch to this colorful ombre quilt. And it is! I love the look of it but I won’t be in a hurry to do it again only because I’m not a huge fan of hand binding these days. But I did finish this quilt a while back and seeing this binding again makes me think I should use it again on a future quilt.

The hand binding thread is a black Pearl Cotton in size 8.
