Hexie Framed Quilt – The RSS Heirloom One
Today I’m finally sharing this Hexie Framed RSS Heirloom quilt! I started making this Ruby Star Society Heirloom Hexie Framed quilt almost a year ago! I don’t know why it took so long to get it up on the blog.
I recently updated the Hexie Framed quilt pattern so I made a couple of new samples to test out the updates. This Ruby Star Heirloom Hexie Framed was one of those samples. Hexie Framed is a fun and modern half hexie quilt pattern. It’s jelly roll and fat quarter friendly.
The Hexie Framed quilt pattern is available in the Quilty Love pattern shop.
Ruby Star Society Heirloom Fabric
I was so excited to get my hands on this Ruby Star Society Heirloom fabric line. It’s such a pretty mix of colors with the reds, peaches, navys, mustard and pinks. All of the small scale prints in this line make it a good blender fabric line for your stash.
I had a fat quarter bundle of the fabric line so I decided to make a Hexie Framed quilt. I haven’t made a Hexie Framed in a long time so it was fun to sew one up again.
The background of this Heirloom Hexie Framed quilt is Ruby Star Society Grid. Grid has been discontinued but this Speckled basic would be a good background replacement. Sweet Cream and White Gold are perfect background colors.
Hexie Framed Quilt Pattern
The Hexie Framed quilt pattern is the very first Quilty Love quilt pattern! It’s what started Quilty Love many years ago. I’ve always loved this quilt and this quilt pattern. I’ve added to the quilt pattern over the years so I decided to completely re-write and update the pattern earlier this year. It’s the same quilt pattern but I’ve added quicker piecing methods and additional sizes.
Two Hexie Sizes
The updated quilt pattern has two hexie size options. The original Hexie Framed has a smaller hexie like the one in this blog post. You can use fat quarters or jelly roll strips for this size.
I added a larger hexie option to the quilt pattern a while back but the updated version now adds all of the quilt sizes in the larger hexie. Before it was just a throw size in that larger hexie.
The larger hexie goes together a little faster since the hexies are bigger. It is fat quarter friendly. You can see the larger hexie sized quilt below.
Tons of quilt sizes in the Hexie Framed Quilt Pattern
The updated Hexie Framed quilt pattern includes tons of quilt sizes now! You can choose between a large and small hexie size and the following quilt sizes:
- Baby or Crib size quilt
- Small throw size quilt
- Large throw size quilt
- Twin size bed quilt
- Queen/King size bed quilt (large hexie size only)
This Heirloom Hexie Framed quilt is the small throw size.
Half Hexie Quilt pattern
Hexie Framed is a half hexie quilt pattern. This means that it uses traditional piecing. No Y seams or anything fancy like that. It is an angles quilt so it is sewn together much like you would sew triangles together.
I would call Hexie Framed an Intermediate quilt pattern. The quilt pattern includes templates but I do recommend a half hexie ruler or triangle ruler. My preferred ruler is this 8.5″ triangle ruler because it works for the entire quilt!
The updated pattern includes a link to a video tutorial to help you piece this half hexie quilt.
I had fun photographing these Ruby Star Society Heirloom fabrics since they are so bright and happy. Plus the half hexies are such a fun shape. This white cutting mat by The Tattooed quilter is my favorite cutting mat. It can be hard to find so grab one if you find it in stock!
This quilt looked pretty fun up on my design wall. You can learn all about how I made this design wall in this video here.
These smaller sized hexies in the Hexie Framed quilt pattern are a little more tedious to piece. The new cutting options help speed up the piecing process but this is definitely a Netflix and quilt type of quilt. I don’t mind more tedious piecing and most of it is pretty mindless in this modern hexie quilt.
If you follow the pressing instructions in the quilt pattern, many of the seams nest making it easier to piece and line up those points. I would consider this an intermediate quilt pattern but my sister made it as her very first quilt and did a great job! If you are a confident beginner or have previous sewing experience I would say you can handle it just fine.
Long Arm Quilting
I sent this Ruby Star Society Heirloom Hexie Framed quilt off to Vintage Stitch for quilting. This pantograph is called Woven Wind and it’s a favorite of mine. It looks good on so many quilts.
Minky Quilt Backing
I made this Hexie Framed around the time my minky quilt backing obsession started so I used a purple Shannon Cuddle wide Minky as the backing. I thought it would be a fun color to complement the colors in this Heirloom fabric line.
I’m still obsessed with Minky as a quilt backing and always stick with a Shannon Cuddle Wide minky. I sometimes carry them in The Wide Back Shop or you can find more wide Shannon Cuddle options here.
